Ecco the Dolphin is an underwater adventure video game series created by Ed Annunziata. The games were originally developed by Novotrade and published by Sega for release on the Sega Genesis/Sega Megadrive video game console in 1992. There were also versions for the Sega CD, Master System and Game Gear. The player controls Ecco, a bottlenose dolphin, on a journey through Earth's vast oceans. The adventure begins the day Ecco's pod suddenly vanishes in a powerful storm, forcing Ecco into a perilous journey that sends him to the far reaches of the ocean, through time, and even into space. It is a quest for answers that will ultimately decide the fate of not only his pod, but the entire planet.

Although there were predecessors to the genre, such as Dolphin for the Atari 2600, Ecco both revolutionized and popularized the underwater video game genre. Although originally hostile to the idea, Sega eventually greenlit the game after approving of what they saw in Ed Annunziata's early prototype of the game. After its release in 1992, the game became a surprising smash hit for Sega when it sold thousands of copies and became a popular title with Genesis/Megadrive owners. The game was very unorthodox for its time and remains unique to this day. Among its achievements were fluid movement in 8 directions, masive level design with speedy movement and no CPU slowdown, excellent graphics, deep story and a mystifying, horrifying, atmospheric soundtrack. The game remains well known for its very high difficulty level.

Thanks to the popularity and strong sales of the first game, two years later in 1994 a sequel followed, Ecco: The Tides of Time. This game continues the story a few years after the end of Ecco the Dolphin. This installment is known to be much more serious and darker than its predecessor and changed the tone of the series when it introduced the multiple timelines and a new graphical style. Other new additions included allowing Ecco to transform into different creatures for a period of time, and the pseudo 3D teleport ring levels. The main focus of the game was the time split. In addition to Ecco's own timeline, two other time periods are visited. Instead of finding the answer to a great mystery, such as the disappearance of Ecco's pod in the first game, Ecco spends most of the game reconstructing the Asterite and then combatting the Vortex once again. The game ended on a cliffhanger ending and was meant to be the middle entry in the series rather than the conclusion.

After Tides of Time, a kid-friendly prequel spinoff called Ecco Junior was released in 1995 for the Sega Genesis. The story acts as a prequel to Ecco the Dolphin, focusing on an adventure Ecco went on in his youth. Ecco, and his two friends, Kitnee and Tara, decide to depart the Home Sea to search for Big Blue, whom is residing in the Endless Ocean. The game was intended for young children, as such the difficulty level is very low with the game being built around short minigames and the player cannot drown or get killed. The game also lacks a narrative.

A third main entry to conclude the series was planned back in the 1990s, but sadly has yet to be developed due to resistance from Sega being unwilling to license the IP back to Ed Annunziata. To this day the fanbase awaits and hopes for the development and relase of Ecco the Dolphin 3.

Defender of the Future
Following the release of the Sega Dreamcast console in 1998, Sega wanted to reboot and reimagine their classic franchises on the powerful new 3D hardware. Like Sonic the Hedgehog, Ecco also received a 3D reboot. This took the form of Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000. The game was later ported to PS2 with some new features but a number of hardware issues, with many considering the Dreamcast version superior. As of now, it is the newest Ecco game and the last one released in a whole 13 years. The game was a reboot of the franchise, developed by an entirely different team than the people that did the original games. The game has a new story completely unconnected to the original series The game was popular enough to warrant the production of a sequel which was in development for the Dreamcast but later cancelled after Sega killed the console in an untimely manner. No new Ecco projects have been announced since.

Unfortunately, Ed Annunziata's new game, The Big Blue, did not get funded on Kickstarter. The project raised $55,764 out of the needed $665,000. Ed will be returning to Kickstarter with a smaller version of the game, The Little Blue. The date for its Kickstarter launch and funding goal have not yet been announced. If The Little Blue gets funded, it will help raise funds towards the creation of the originally planned Big Blue. It is very important that we support the Little Blue when it does appear on Kickstarter, otherwise the Big Blue will likely never get released. Ed has said that the Little Blue will have a much lower funding goal. If the Little Blue gets funded, it will be free for everyone to play, so they will know what the BIg Blue will play like, that way the community can get excited about supporting the final version of the game! Stay tuned for updates and news about The Little Blue!

What we know about The Little Blue:

*Note: No details final

Unfortunately, Ed Annunziata's new game, The Big Blue, did not get funded on Kickstarter. The project raised $55,764 out of the needed $665,000. As a result, Ed will be returning to Kickstarter with a smaller version of the game, The Little Blue. The date for its Kickstarter launch and funding goal have not yet been announced. The platforms the Little Blue will be coming to have also not yet been announced, but we can assume it will be for one or more (or all) of the planned platforms for the Big Blue: Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android.

The Little Blue will essentially be a free demo of the Big Blue. However, it will be enough of a sizeable chunk of the game and have enough gameplay to be considered a game of its own. The Little Blue will need funding via Kickstarter for the game to be completed and released. Ed has said that the funding goal will be much lower than the $665,000 asked for the Big Blue. It is very important that we support the Little Blue when it does appear on Kickstarter, otherwise the Big Blue will likely never get released. Depending on how much money the Little Blue raises, Ed and the team will be able to re-evaluate how much money will be needed for the Big Blue. Feedback will also be vital to improve the final version of the game.

Ed has released some details about the Little Blue:

-The Little Blue will feature new and better Kickstarter awards
-A dolphin and one more creature will be playable.
-Players will get to use the song mechanics
-The game will contain two huge areas plus a “home base” (probably a hub world)
-10 or more major creatures will be featured in the game, including a gigantic sea creature, possibly such as the plesiosaurs featured in the mock-ups.
-The game will feature story events and quests for the player to do

What we know about The Big Blue:

*No details final!

The Big Blue is a spiritual successor to Ecco the Dolphin being created by Ed Annunziata, the creator of Ecco, and will be both familiar and new to long time Ecco fans. Many people from the original Ecco games are involved in its production, including the composer, Spencer Nilsen.

Story

Like Ecco, the Big Blue takes place in a world without humans. This game will take place in a world one million years after the extinction of humans. The ocean has become sentient (like in Trellia's future) and the sea creatures have developed their own unique societies, such as super pods a million dolphins in size and excavators searching for answers about the extinct human society. Some of the sea creatures are called singers and have developed a special technology through their highly advanced songs. In addition to being used as a method of communication, information transmission and echolocation, these songs have amazing powers, like the power to create life or perform other functions (possibly destroying stuff like in Ecco). The game will have an emphasis on both traditional creatures, such as dolphins, as well as new creatures. Jon Berg, a creature designer for the original Star Wars, is working as a creature designer for the game. Part of the game's story will be the Gaia theory: the idea that the Earth is a living thing. Ed hopes to show how the ocean evolved and changed after the human race died off. The game hopes to change the way players think about nature, the ocean and our planet.

Themes: Climate change, mass extinction, predation, evolution, biogenesis.

Gameplay

The Big Blue will have 2D gameplay, but the environments and visuals will both be in modern 3D graphics. The game is being developed in the Unity engine. The current planned platforms for release are: Windows, Mac, Android and iOS. The game may support Oculus Rift. The game will not require an internet connection to be played.

The Big Blue hopes to explore new angles and concepts previously not seen in underwater adventure games before. Many creatures in the game will be playable and each will have a unique feel to the play control. The currently planned methods of control input are: keyboard, analog stick and touch controls. There will be some puzzle solving, quests to do, and there will be an emphasis on exploration. As a 2D game, the Big Blue will not be on rails like a traditional side-scroller, but will have branching paths and other ways for players to explore in a 3D environment.

Depending on which creature you are playing as, other creatures will hunt you down in a predatory fashion. There will be a fairly well developed AI to create these underwater ecosystems. According to Ed:

“Basic behaviors of enemies would include:

Swim away from you

Attack you if you are within range

protect a territory (only attack if you enter an area)

Protect another creature

If you cross it's path it attacks

Once it sees you it stalks you (at various lengths of persistance)”

There will also be an emphasis on aquatic surface interaction, how things interact with the surface of the water when they break through it and re-enter it. Echolocation and singer technology will be an important part of the gameplay.

Atmosphere

The Big Blue hopes to make underwater environments for the game that are both beautiful and frightening. Music and sound will both be a very important side of the game to create these atmospheric environments for the player. The lighting will get progessively darker as the player-controlled creature swims deeper down into the ocean.
